Description

Botanical Name: Passiflora incarnata

Also known as Purple Maypop

This herb with its stunningly beautiful flower is native to the Americas where it has been used for centuries to heal bruises and cuts. Modern day herbalists recommend it as a powerful nervine tonic

Passionflower is best known to aid sleep and rectify disturbed sleep patterns. It is a far better alternative to addictive chemical sedatives prescribed by your doctor for insomnia and nervous conditions such as anxiety, PTSD excitability and restlessness.

Passionflower can be taken to relieve pre-menstrual tension, nervous tachycardia, tension headaches, palpitations and to assist in the withdrawal from addictive drugs.

Early research suggests that passionflower reduces some symptoms of Attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adults and children. Research has shown that it may help reduce hyperactivity and promote a sense of calm. This is due to the herb’s ability to increase levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain, which has a calming effect on the nervous system

An active phytochemical component of passionflower called benzoflavone moiety (BZF) has been shown to greatly reduce nicotine withdrawal. Many previous chain smokers have quit tobacco altogether by weaning themselves off Passionflower. They either smoked Passionflower in the morning and refrained from cigarettes for the rest of the day, or alternatively smoked Passionflower sparingly as a ‘crutch’ to get them past their initial craving and habit of smoking. Many people report success quitting smoking by mixing passionflower into their tobacco and smoking the mixture. Over the course of a few weeks, they put more and more passionflower and less and less tobacco until only the passionflower remains.

Passionflower is also used for seizures, hysteria, asthma, symptoms of menopause, nervousness and excitability, restless legs, palpitations, irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure, fibromyalgia, nerve pain, shingles, neuralgia, relieving symptoms related to narcotic drug withdrawal, trauma, sedation, mood enhancement and relaxation.

Some people apply passionflower to the skin for hemorrhoids, burns, and pain and swelling (inflammation). In foods and beverages, passionflower extract is used as a flavouring.

Passionflower is commonly found in combination herbal products used as a sedative for promoting calmness and relaxation as well as magnesium sleep products. Other herbs contained in these products generally include German chamomile, hops, kava, skullcap, and valerian.
